Taking home five awards, the 177-year-old company got the trophy for Media of the Year for the 14th time since 1989, and Print Media of the Year for 2010. Ticoan Myrie got an award for Best Service Agent – alternative marketing representative for Gleaner Online, while Abena Banton got the runner-up certificate for service agent for print. The award for Best Service Agent – alternative media house, rounded it out for Gleaner Online. Christene King, chief executive officer and executive editor of the Sunday Herald, was named Media Personality of the Year. Guest speaker Governor General Sir Patrick Allen congratulated the top achievers and encouraged the collegiality between the advertising agencies and the media. “When such influential bodies as yourselves affirm each other, the country is inspired by your example of solidarity,” said Sir Patrick. He commended the media and advertising fraternities for creating and sponsoring programmes of affirmation, and invited them to join in his nation-building‘I Believe Initiative’(IBI). “As you continue your fine tradition on national upliftment, I am seeking your partnership in the ‘I Believe Initiative’. Advertising agencies as partners with Jamaica’s corporate giants, who are the very engine of the country’s economic growth. Media houses help to shape the opinions and self-image of our fellow Jamaicans. Your partnership is crucial to the IBI, which focuses on self-actualisation, particularly for our troubled youth, who are vulnerable to abuse and easy recruitment into criminal gangs,” he stated. The governor general’s ‘I Believe Initiative’ of Jamaica is aimed at leading a campaign to inspire and motivate Jamaicans to believe in their God-given potential and to contribute to building a prosperous and peaceful nation. Under the theme ‘Media & Advertising: A Proud Partnership’, the AAAJ honoured their colleagues in the media fraternity for their dedication to the industry. OVERALL AWARDEES - Best Service Agent Awards – alternative marketing representatives – Ticoan Myrie for Gleaner Online; Kayan Nelson for HYPE TV; Dominic Azan, Intelligent Multi-Media and Sharla Murray-Wright, Observer Online. - The Best Service Agent Awards – alternative media house – Gleaner Online, RE TV, Observer Online and Flow. - Service agents runners-up certificates were awarded to Print – Abena Banton from The Gleaner; Radio – Tanya Thurlow from RJR 94; TV – Natonia Sylva, TVJ, and Outdoor Advertising – Peter Rose, Caledonia. The media house runners-up certificates went to: The Observer for print, RJR 94 for radio and TV – CVM. - Awardees in the service agents category were Print – Sharla MurrayWright from The Observer; Radio – Corrine Stewart from IRIE FM; TV – Jacqueline Fenton from TVJ and Outdoor Advertising – Sandra Reece from Signtex. - Media house winners were Gleaner in the print category; IRIE FM – radio; Television Jamaica – TV; Buzzz for the magazine category; and Lithographic for print house. There was a tie with Caledonia and National Outdoor Advertising for outdoor advertising. - Runners-up in the media house of the year award were RJR Group and The Observer. The Observer also got a special award for innovation. Gleaner is Media of the Year – again!
