The competition was launched on August 3, 2020with two online training workshops con- ductedwith seniors across the island. Theworkshops sought to instil views relevant to mastering public speak- ing. The seniors were taught how to develop an effective public speech, focusing on content and style. On August 17, 2020, twelve seniors from eight parishes submitted round-one videos, each speaking on one of the following three topics: ‘The more we communicate the less we say’, ‘Intelligence is not enough’, and ‘Ill health begins in themind’. Theywere aided in the development of their recorded presentation by a youth mentor assigned to them by JADE Limited. Following a rigorous vetting pro- cess, eight participants from the following parishes – Kingston, St Andrew, Trelawny,Westmoreland, St Catherine, St Thomas, and Clarendon made their way to the second round of that the competition. In round two, a unique topic was assigned to each participant. At this stage as well, JADE’s social media audiencewas given the opportunity towatch and vote for their favourite videos on Facebook and Instagram. The seniors and their youngmentors weremobilised to attract votes from Jamaicans and foreigners alike. At the close of voting, the participants were ranked in order of most popular to least popular contestant on social media. The next stage of vetting in round two saw the expert team of JADE assessors undertaking an evaluation of the presentation. The combina- tion of votes from the Fan Favourite and the expert assessment led to the following persons advancing to the grand finals: Adlin Smith, Ingrid Hardy, Monica Roofe-Woolcock, Venita Hanson, Deloris Higgins and Stephanie Taylor. The grand final was held on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at 10 a.m. via Zoom and streamed live on MLSS and JADE Ltd social media. Adlin Smith of Westmoreland emerged cham- pion, first runner-up was Stephanie Taylor of St Thomas and second run- ner-up Monica Roofe-Woolcock of St Catherine.
