THE GLEANER, MONDAY, MARCH 7, 2022 | www.jamaica-gleaner.com | SPORTS B2 MANCHESTER, ENGLAND (AP): K EVIN DE Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez both scored twice to allow Manchester City to outclass Manchester United for the second time this season, winning the derby 4-1 yesterday. For City, a six-point lead was restored at the top of the Premier League over Liverpool. For United, the fourth Champions League spot has been surrendered for now after Arsenal won 3-2 at Watford. City took only five minutes to go in front, with Bernardo Silva cutting back for De Bruyne to shoot through United captain Harry Maguire’s legs and past goalkeeper David De Gea. United levelled with a superb counter-attack in the 22ndminute completed by Jadon Sancho. Paul Pogba sprayed a fine ball to put the 21-year-old Sancho through on the left. The City academy graduate had a lot to do given he was up against KyleWalker, but he cut past the right back and Rodri before bending a strike into the far corner from just inside the box. FOLLOW-UP SHOT City took only six minutes to regain the lead. Phil Foden brilliantly flicked the ball over Victor Lindelof before his shot was parried by De Gea. Bernardo Silva’s follow-up shot was blocked before Alex Telles inadvertently poked the ball into the path of De Bruyne to score his second. It was Mahrez’s turn to contribute the goals in the second half at the Etihad Stadium. De Bruyne assisted for his first, with a corner from the left met by Mahrez with a stunning half-volley that flew in via a slight deflection off Maguire in the 68th. There was initially an offside reprieve for United in the 90th, but then the VAR review did allow Mahrez’s strike to count. Taking into account the two league games between the neighbours this season, City have outscored United 6-1. In the day’s first game, Bukayo Saka scored one goal and set up another as Arsenal edgedWatford. A cut-back from Saka enabled Martin Odegaard to slot in his fifth goal of the Premier League season after five minutes. The lead lasted only six minutes as Cucho Hernandez’s acrobatic volley equalised for Watford. But Arsenal went back in front in the 30th minute with a cleverly crafted goal from Saka. The England forward dispossessed Tom Cleverley before passing to Alexandre Lacazette, who held the ball up then back-heeled the ball back for Saka to fire in. Gabriel Martinelli capped an impressive Arsenal performance as he curled the ball past goalkeeper Ben Foster seven minutes into the second half. The Gunners looked to be cruising before Moussa Sissoko pulled one back in the 87th minute, but the hosts were unable to find an equaliser. The result lifted Arsenal to fourth on 48 points, one point above Manchester United and three games in hand. Watford remain next-from-last in the standings. LONDON (CMC): FOUR MEMBERS of Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz – Ravel Morrison, Kemar Roofe, Andre Gray, and Jamal Lowe – led a Caribbean goal feast in Britain on Saturday. Midfielder Morrison, 29, bagged a brace – in the 22nd and 47th minutes – and also hit the woodwork to inspire Derby County to a vital 2-0 victory at Pride Park over fellow Championship strugglers Barnsley, which revived their survival hopes after three matches without a win. Morrison finished off a beautifully worked Rams move for the opener and claimed his second, firing in the rebound after captain Tom Lawrence rattled the crossbar. The brace were Morrison’s first league goals in England for nearly eight years, the former Manchester United midfielder’s drought having stretched back to April 2014. Gray, 30, who is on loan from Premier League Watford, smashed home his first goal at Loftus Road this season to give Championship promotion hopefuls Queens Park Rangers a deserved half-time lead, but visitors Cardiff City hit back to claim a 2-1 victory. LATE WINNER The 29-year-old Roofe, meanwhile, came off the bench to bundle in a late winner for Rangers – his 12th of the season – in a 1-0 victory over Aberdeen at a packed Ibrox, which moved them level on points at the top of the Scottish Premiership with Celtic ahead of their game at Livingston on Sunday. Lowe, 27, gave Championship promotion chasers Bournemouth the lead on 50 minutes, slotting in after beating goalkeeper Daniel Iversen to the ball, but Preston North End came from behind to win 2-1 at Deepdale. Twenty-year-old Cameron Archer, whose mother is Jamaican, dri lled in the equaliser on 54 minutes before Emil Riis Jakobsen grabbed an 89th-minute winner, with Bournemouth defender Adam Smith and boss Scott Parker sent off in the aftermath. At Carrow Road in the East of England, Reggae Boyz target Ivan Toney fired home two penalties in a brilliant hat-trick to steer Premier League Brentford to a 3-1 win at relegation-threatened Norwich City. At Boundary Park in the nor thwest, Barbados international Hallam Hope stabbed home from close range deep into first-half added time to give League Two strugglers Oldham Athletic the lead, but visitors Carlisle United roared back to take all three points with two goals after the break. It was 27-year-old Hope’s third goal in Oldham’s last four outings and fifth for the season. Reggae Boyz quartet leads goal parade MOUNT MAUNGANUI, NEW ZEALAND (AP): POOJA RASTRAKAmade a careerbest 69 in a 112-run seventhwicket partnership with Sneh Rana, which lifted India to a 107run win over Pakistan in their opening match yesterday at the Women’s Cricket World Cup. India were the first team in four matches at the tournament to bat first on winning the toss. The other three teams - New Zealand against theWest Indies, Bangladesh against South Africa, and England against Australia - all bowled first and failed in run chases. In yesterday’s match, India made a commanding 244-7 then defended their total superbly through the spin bowling of Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Deepti Sharma, and Rana as Pakistan struggled to generate momentum and were out for 137 in 43 overs. Left-armer Gayakwad and off-spinners Sharma and Rana bowled with relentless accuracy to a suffocating off-side field, and the Pakistan batters couldn’t find profitable scoring areas. Gayakwad took 4-31 from her 10 overs. Wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh claimed five dismissals. FLIGHT AND DROP There wasn’t much turn from the pitch at the Bay Oval, but the India spinners used flight and drop to restrict Pakistan. After five overs, Pakistan was 6-0; after 15 overs, 43-1; after 20 overs, 65-3. Pakistan also bowled well early in the India innings, checking the scoring through the use of spin. India lost opener Shafali Verma in only the third over, but a half century from Smitri Mandhana allowed them to recover to 96-1 in the 22nd over when Mandhana fell for 52. UPPER HAND India then lost five wickets for 18 runs between the 23rd and 34th overs, slumping to 114-6 as Pakistan appeared to grab the upper hand. The wickets that fell included India captainMithali Raj for nine. In taking the field Sunday, Mithali became the first woman and third player after Javed Miandad and Sachin Tendulkar to play at six World Cups after her first in 2000. Mithali has played in all 11 of India’s matches against Pakistan and India are unbeaten in those matches. Her goal yesterday was for India to score 250 or more, and they fell just short. Vastrakar was the reason they even came close, coming to the crease at number seven and reaching her one-day international half-century from 48 balls. Her entire innings of 69 came from 57 deliveries and swung the match heavily towards India. Vastrakar found the perfect partner in Rana, who also scored at a high rate, reaching her maiden ODI half-century from 45 balls with four boundaries. India were 160-6 in the 40th over and added 84 runs in the last 10 overs to put a score on the board, which required Pakistan to reach their highest World Cup total to win. India’s win took them to the top of the points table on run-rate after the first full matches. South Africa, Australia, and theWet Indies also have two points.
