A Tribute to Dr. The Hon. Rae Davis

NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | SUNDAY, MAY 23, 2021 18 R AE DAVIS was an outstand- ing intellectual who, with his calm, deliberate, penetrative, and incisivemanner brought unique strategic thinking and creativity to a wide variety of transformative in- itiatives in which he was engaged. I had the privilege of serving with him in some of these endeavours of national importance and reflect on two of these. Firstly, we were founding mem- bers of the Jamaica Association for Training and Development (JATAD), which has evolved into the Human Resource Management Association of Jamaica. Rae played a central and critical role in JATAD’s Human Development Knowledge Network of specialists in Human Resource Development and Labour and Employment Relations during the period when Jamaica experi- enced significant brain drain. In performing this role, he was able to transfer the method of scientific thinking from his training as an en- gineer to find effective solutions for challenges and issues related to the development and empowerment of people. Secondly, Rae served as amember of the Evaluation Committee, which I chaired, for a project implemented by the Mico University College in collaboration with E-Learning Jamaica and the Ministry of Education, Youth and information. This project trained 4, 600 teachers in secondary schools across Jamaica in the integrated use of information and communication technologies in the teaching-learning process. His evaluative and guiding inputs contributed to this initiative, laying an important foundation for virtual teaching and learning in our educa- tion system in Jamaica. The education sector in Jamaica and the CARICOM region will surely miss this excellent transformational leader.
