NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | SUNDAY, MAY 23, 2021 10 TRIBUTE TO DR RAE DAVIS II W E JOIN hundreds of Jamaicans, espe- cially in the education sector, in cel- ebrating the life of a patriot, leader, educator, friend, and colleague. Born during the colonial period, Rae played a pivotal role in guiding the transition of Jamaica from the legacy of its colonial past into a proud, inde- pendent nation. His contribution was unique in that as an engineer by profession and train- ing, he laid the foundation for the growth of a technical culture through his teaching in high school, Clarendon College and Excelsior, at The University of theWest Indies, and CAST/ UTech Ja. He provided leadership in education transformation at the Ministry of Education, was chairman of The Jamaica Transformation Commission, and chairman of the University Council of Jamaica. What distinguishedRae in these pivotal roles was a keen sense of commitment to the uplift- ment of the Jamaican people through educa- tion. Hewas admiredby his colleagues, friends, and family for the calmdignity and courage that characterised his long service to Jamaica. As a friend and colleague, he was devoted, reliable, considerate, thoughtful, and trusted. We remember him fondly when he served as president of the University of Technology, Jamaica, where he was a model leader who understood and practised good governance, accountability, and provided transformative leadership. It is our view that the University of Technology, Jamaica, under his leader- ship, developed a reputation as a reliable partner in sustainable development through the many services that it provided to the private sector, the public sector and to the Jamaican society through the values of good citizenship, which he personified in his own conduct. We extend our condolences to the Davis family and in particular to his dear wife, Jemelia. Jamaica has lost an exemplary leader, a pa- triotic citizen, and a kind and gracious friend to all his colleagues and friends.
