Remembering Edwin Samuel Jones, OJ, CD
THE SUNDAY GLEANER, MAY 2, 2021 | FEATURE1 I8 i 8 TRIB T TO PROF EDWIN JONES FEATURE PROFESSOR EDWIN JONES ... We will always miss you; and your passing is our great loss: Of your kindness, of your grace, of your dignity The beauty of your smile, your tenderness The twinkle in your eyes Your considered advice before taking some steps of life walkways How you cared for our students and institutions, Our careers, the welfare of our families Our well-being, our happiness. And humbly so. Your generosity had no bounds Well before these present times of measured, calculated giving You gave And you carried forth and engendered in us (I think of Peter, of Richard, of myself ) The radical tradition of our likkle country; of the likkle man The likkle woman who send into the skies our island-land. You sought no praise, expected no reward. But Jamaica has lost a great son I have lost a wise brother So. Sail safely on … You have no need of the coin for the ferryman! HARRY GOULBOURNE Emeritus Professor of Sociology South Bank University London, UK ‘We will always miss you’ I T IS with deep sadness that the faculty and staff at the Department of Government, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) learnt of the passing of Professor Edwin Jones, former dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and head of the Department of Government, on March 10, 2021. Professor Jones was a distinguished professor in the field of public policy and management. He was renowned locally, regional and internationally for his scholarship and service in the field. Professor Jones also served in many capacities, such as special adviser to the Office of Jamaica’s PrimeMinister, and has held public service board appointments, such as membershiponJamaica’s Public ServicesCommission. Professor Jones spent over 40 years contributing to academia andpublic service in the region. His training as a teachermade himan exceptional lecturer. He has lectured at many departments at the Mona campus of The UWI, although he was attached specifically to the Department of Government. Professor Jones felt that contributing to the service of others, either through public service or education, was a lifelong endeavour. Therefore, even after his retirement from The UWI, he kept on contributing to scholarship and public service. He has also contributed to his alma mater, The Mico University College, where he groomed and interacted with many teachers in training. Jamaica, The UWI, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Department of Government have lost a transformational leader, a creative lecturer, a nation builder whose contribution to public policy, academic administration and scholarship will continue to redound to the benefit of the entire Caribbean region. I personally extend, and on behalf of the Department Government, my deepest condolences to his wife, Mrs Maria Jones, and other members of his family. May he rest in peace and light perpetually shine upon him.
