MSMEs contribute to growth and development T HE Jamaica Intellectual Property Office (JIPO) celebrates World Intellectual Property Week during the last week of April each year. Intellectual property (IP) plays a significant role in encouraging innovation and creativity. This year, we celebrate World Intellectual Property Day and Jamaica Intellectual PropertyWeek under the theme ‘Intellectual Property and MSMEs: Taking your ideas to market’. Every business starts with an idea. Every micro, small and medium-size enterprise (MSME) started with an idea that took shape in someone’s mind and eventually made its way to market. Jamaican businesses may be categorised as micro, small and medium-size enterprises (MSMEs) and are contributors to economic growth and development in Jamaica, through generating employment, creating and retaining wealth, all of which lead to economic growth in the country. Micro enterprises account for over 80 per cent of Jamaica’s MSMEs. The Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce (MIIC) commends the JIPO on its huge efforts and contributions to the development of the MSME sector in Jamaica, through the advancement of the intellectual property rights system in Jamaica. The list of activities planned for this week is impressive and reflects the diversity of intellectual property and its usefulness to MSMEs. The development of a culture of innovation is critical to the growth of MSMEs and the Jamaican economy, and will only be achieved by increasing the understanding and registration of IP rights, as well as the monetisation and commercialisation of innovation, inventions and other intellectual property. The aim of the Government in that regard is to bolster the capacity of MSME support institutions, public and private, to nurture, accommodate and grow local innovation. As the GOJ, we are committed to creating and maintaining an enabling environment where MSMEs can register, protect, monetise and commercialise their IP, for their own benefit and for the benefit of Jamaica. The MIIC salutes JIPO on this occasion and embrace all of its efforts to move ahead. DR. THE HONOURABLE NORMAN DUNN, MP Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce IV
