Scholarship to go 2021
NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | THURSDAY, MAY 27, 2021 11 F OR 37 years the Jamaica Teachers’ Association Co-op Credit Union Ltd has been awarding scholarships and grants to its members. The scholarships are intended to be used for tuition payments for the coming school year. The scholarships came about in 1984 as the credit union celebrated its 25th anniversary. These scholarships and grants are awarded to members who are in their final year of study at a recognised tertiary institution. Initially, the scholarship was only open to students of The University of theWest Indies, but now students from other institutions can also apply. It recognises and will award any member of the credit union attending a tertiary institution – whether local or international. The only requirement is that they should be in their final year of study. The credit union has “moved with the times”and tried to remain relevant to themembership, recognising that there arenowseveral institutions that offer degree programmes that have benefited our members. Another significant changewith regard to the tertiary scholarship is that it added Desmond ‘DC’ Gascoigne Award for Excellence component. This is the highest award given under this programme and is awarded to the member who receives the best scores on their application and interview combined. This component of the awards was added in 1999 when the JTA Credit Union celebrated its 40th anniversary. In 2016, the credit union expanded the scholarship even further. It is now open to not only members who are pursuing their first degree but also members in their final year of study and are reading for a master’s degree. JTA Co-op Credit Union’s Tertiary Scholarships has three categories. 1. The Desmond‘DC’Gascoigne Award for Excellence – this is the highest award and only one member is awarded each year. 2. Tertiary Scholarships – the number of scholarships awarded each year in this category varies. It is determined by the strength of the applicants from year to year. 3. Grants – as with the Tertiary Scholarships, the number of grants awarded varies from year to year.
