Scholarship to go 2021

NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | THURSDAY, MAY 27, 2021 12 I T HAS been a full circle experience for Travis Rowe, who became a Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS) member at only five years old. WHEN HE was in fourth form, he got an internship with the financial institution. Then, in 2017, he was delighted to learn that he was selected as a Victoria Mutual Foundation scholarship recipient, and three years later, he is employed to the organisation as a finance officer. “It meant a lot to be awarded a scholarship by an organisation that has such great values, and the fact that I have been connected with VM for so long made the experience really special for me,” he said. Rowe, who read for a Bachelor of Science degree in double majors – Management Studies and Accounting – graduated from The University of theWest Indies as a valedictorian with First Class Honours last year. “Knowing that not only my family believed in me, but that an organisation with such a long Jamaican history has chosen to invest in me gave me that confidence to domy best. Also, having the peace of mind to know that my fees were covered gave me the opportunity to have a full university experience, to really focus onmy academics and to be immersed in extracurricular activities,”he said. He advises other young persons to keep trying and remain committed to their dreams, despite challenges they may be facing on their path to success. “Everybody has their own journey and destiny, as long as you are doing what is for you, it will be beautiful and perfect.” Clover Moore, assistant vice-president, corporate affairs & communications, Victoria Mutual Group, said the VM Foundation scholarship programme is a demonstration of VM’s strong support of education and youth development. “Our country is made up of so many bright minds and our scholars, like Travis, remind us of the immense potential that exists and reinforces the importance of giving back to support education and to help young people achieve their goals,” she said.
