NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | THURSDAY, MAY 27, 2021 7 B GLC TERTIARY Education Grant is set to benefit 350 students attending tertiary institutions across the island . “WE HAVE allocated over $17 million to assist tertiary students with the tuition fees for the academic year 2021-2022,” said Vitus Evans, executive director of the Betting, Gaming & Lotteries Commission (BGLC). “The BGLC Education Grant is an important initi- ative for the commission as this enables us to ensure that some of the proceeds of the gaming industry are used for good causes – in this case, the education of Jamaican youth, which ultimately contributes to national development.” The BGLC accepts applications from stu- dents attending first to fourth year of an un- dergraduate programme at an accredited tertiary institution in Jamaica. Students may be participating in any course of study; how- ever, must be attending full-time and be no older than 26 years at September 2021. Applications for the BGLC Education Grant open online on May 20. Students should visit the BGLC’s website at www.bglc.gov.jm to ac- cess the online application portal. The appli- cation process requires students to complete the online form providing personal contact details, contact details for two references and information on their course of study. Applications are to be accompanied by supporting documents which are uploaded to the online application portal. The docu- ments required are a current photograph, certified copies of a national photo ID and the latest available transcript reflecting grades for at least one semester of the 2020-2021 academic year, and a GPA of at least 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale). Students entering the first year of studies should submit their acceptance letter and the most recent CAPE and/or CSEC results that are available and which were the basis of acceptance to the tertiary institution. An important aspect of the application is a 500-word essay, the theme for 2021 is ‘Responsible Gambling’. “Each year we ask the students to write an essay which demonstrates their awareness of an issue related to the gaming industry,” said Jeanette Lewis, manager, corporate affairs & communication at BGLC. The deadline for applying is July 16.
