NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2025 20 INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMS DAY/CUSTOMS WEEK FEATURE CUSTOMS PROMOTES LITERACY THROUGH ‘READ ACROSS JAMAICA’ CAMPAIGN In 2024, Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) reaffirmed its commitment to national development beyond trade and border security by fostering a love for reading through its ‘Read Across Jamaica’ campaign. This initiative saw Customs officers visiting schools across the island, engaging young minds with interactive storytelling sessions, book donations, and mentorship opportunities. By placing literacy at the heart of its outreach efforts, JCA empowered students with the tools to learn, grow, and envision a brighter future. The campaign was more than just reading books – it was about opening doors to new possibilities, nurturing curiosity, and reinforcing the Agency’s role as a partner in education. Customs Officer, Angella Barber, who led the Clan Carthy leg of ‘Read Across Jamaica’ in May 2024, recently engaged with a group of students from a Vineyard Town-based institution. Her efforts in promoting literacy and community involvement continue to inspire the youth. 5
