International Customs Day & Customs Week 2025

NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2025 30 INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMS DAY/CUSTOMS WEEK FEATURE IN OUR interconnected world, where digitisation fuelled by new and emerging technologies and innovation, is having a profound impact on how goods move safely and efficiently across international borders and jurisdictions, customs administrations serving global supply chains must keep pace with disruptive technologies which are transforming the face of cross-border trade and logistics. Given Jamaica’s connection to over 140 ports globally and the imminent expansion of the Panama Canal, Jamaica must capitalise on the emerging trade and commercial opportunities by moving with alacrity to embrace the technological marvels of the 5th Industrial Revolution, such as artificial intelligence (AI), Blockchain and IoT (Internet of Things) technologies. This must be an imperative for the Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA), which remains committed to optimising the operational efficiencies, transparency and security of the customs administration and clearance processes, and equally for us as customs brokers, who interface daily with importers and exporters seeking to move their goods faster and at reduced costs without compromising on security and enforcement responsibilities. Time is not on our side. The leading global trade and logistics countries of the Asia Pacific, namely, Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Korea, Thailand, and Singapore, are making quantum leaps in AI adoption and technology innovation. Artificial intelligence can transform Jamaica’s customs and shipping and logistics industries through the improvement of operational efficiencies, safety, and decision-making. AI’s benefits include real-time analytics, automated processes, route optimisation, and performance forecasting, leading to reduced costs, faster deliveries, and improved customer experience. The 2024 report produced by Amazon Web Services in collaboration with Access Partnership, titled Accelerating AI Skills: Preparing the Asia Pacific Workforce for Jobs of the Future, projects that, by 2028, 94% of employers in Singapore and the Asia Pacific region expect to have full AI adoption in their operations. This is what we are up against in a highly competitive international arena. It therefore stands to reason that, if Jamaica is to achieve globally competitive customs administration and clearance processes for greater economic prosperity, there must be agile investments and skillful application of best-in-class technologies. It is against this background that the Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Association of Jamaica (CBFFAJ), which observes its 60th anniversary in 2025, will invest in training its over 200 members in critical areas such as AI, cybersecurity and Blockchain technologies during the course of this year. In so doing, the goal is to scale up our businesses and prioritise the retooling of our staff with critical digital skills to enhance our customer service and delivery, to catch up and compete in an increasingly complex shipping and global supply chain network. So, as Jamaica joins the World Customs Organisation (WCO) and the rest of the global customs community, in consideration of this new normal of disruptive technology and change, the CBFFAJ stands ready to collaborate with the JCA in any initiative to consolidate our effective deployment of existing, long-standing technologies like ASYCUDA, the Automated System for Customs Data, and to wisely adopt and implement new AI-enabled technologies for the common good of our industry. We are pleased to offer our congratulations and best wishes to the leadership, management and staff of the JCA on the occasion of International Customs Day and Customs Week 2025. MARCIA A.
