NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2025 36 INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMS DAY/CUSTOMS WEEK FEATURE IN AN increasingly interconnected world, a robust customs framework is vital for driving inward investments, stimulating job creation, and expanding export opportunities. The Jamaica manufacturing industry continues to be the cornerstone of our economy, providing sustainable jobs across all skill levels. It is through efficient agencies like the Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) that this growth is facilitated, ensuring streamlined processes and a business-friendly environment for local and international stakeholders alike. Despite challenges such as severe weather events in 2024 and ongoing supply chain and logistical obstacles, the JMEA remains steadfast in our commitment to achieving a GDP contribution of J$81 billion by the end of 2025. We see this not only as an economic target, but as a shared vision – one that underscores the importance of innovation, resilience, and strategic partnerships throughout the manufacturing sector. In observance of International Customs Day on Sunday, January 26, 2025, under the theme: ‘Customs Delivering on its Commitment to Efficiency, Security and Prosperity’, I commend the JCA for its tireless efforts to simplify trade, protect our borders, and advance Jamaica’s global competitiveness. By continuing to refine policies, adopt modernised technologies, and prioritise transparent communication, the JCA can further promote a climate that fosters productivity, investment, and sustainable expansion. We encourage the JCA to see itself in close partnership with the JMEA, working hand in hand to reduce barriers, facilitate export growth, and reinforce the confidence of local and foreign investors. As we navigate evolving economic conditions and strive to meet our ambitious goals, cooperation and mutual understanding between government agencies and the private sector will be key to securing Jamaica’s economic prosperity. On behalf of the JMEA, I extend our deepest gratitude to the Jamaica Customs Agency for its unwavering dedication. We value this partnership and look forward to forging even stronger ties in the months and years ahead. May this Customs Week celebration serve as a beacon of progress, unity, and renewed commitment toward a thriving, resilient Jamaica for all.
