NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2025 55 INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMS DAY/CUSTOMS WEEK FEATURE THE JAMAICA Customs Agency joined stakeholders in building awareness and compliance in the non-profit organisation (NPO) sector. The Charities Sensitisation Session hosted by the Department of Cooperatives and Friendly Societies (DCFS) on Friday, June 21, 2024 at the Ridgemount United Church Hall in Mandeville, Manchester, allowed members of charitable organisations in the Central Region, to be engaged with stakeholders within the sector to garner valuable information and have their questions and concerns answered by the respective entities. Rochelle Riley, Customs Officer, used her segment to guide attendees on how they can benefit from being a registered charity when importing charitable items, the correct usage of the certificate of registration, the benefits involved as well as the necessary documents and procedures to follow when clearing charitable items. Ms. Riley also gave valuable insight on the components of a proper invoice as well as the necessary steps to take when querying issues with shipments, much to the appreciation of the attendees. The host entity, DCFS, lead the presentations focusing on compliance and filing obligations while the other stakeholders Tax Administration of Jamaica and Companies Office of Jamaica presented on compliance and filing requirements for all NPOs and money laundering and terrorism financing and compliance, respectively, to conclude the very informative session.
