NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | SUNDAY, JUNE 9, 2024 35 AHEAD OF Teachers Day set for Wednesday, May 8, The Jamaica Teachers’ Association took time out to celebrate a retired teacher who, on April 2, attained the age of 100 years. Enid Bernard, flanked by several of her present and former colleagues, was one of the first persons to be pinned by the President of the Retired Teachers Association of St Andrew, Marcia Purcell, as the JTA celebrates 60 years of existence. Ms Bernard regularly attends the monthly meeting of the Kingston and St Andrew Retired Teachers’ Association at the JTA head office, 97B Church Street. Regional Officer Petal Thompson also shared lens time with her and saluted Ms Bernard. During her teaching years, she taught at Winchester, St Thomas, Padmore Primary, St Andrew, Elletson Primary, St Andrew, among other institutions. She retired from Harbour View Primary which was her longest teaching experience. She was a senior teacher and had special responsibilities for Brownies, and students’ textbooks. Ms Bernard who was born in Hayfield, St Thomas, says: “I continue to carry out personal business like going to the bank and grocery store. My only deficiency is my sight for which I am in the process of getting a pair of tested glasses.” In the meantime, Ms Bernard says she reads without the aid of glasses and remains alert in meetings that she attends.
