NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | THURSDAY, MAY 16, 2024 6 AS PART of our 20th anniversary celebrations in 2021, the Supreme Ventures Foundation’s (SVF) focused its resources on developing transformational legacy projects in the areas of education with a focus on children in state care. Working closely with our long-time partners the Child Protection and Family Services Agency, the SV Foundation awarded 20 university and college students who are transitioning from state care with financial aid that covered all expenses related to tuition, boarding, and other educational costs throughout their tertiary level academic programmes at a cost of approximately $100 million over four years. “Since my early days, the dream of attending university has been a constant beacon of hope, yet the path to realising this dream seem shrouded in uncertainty, particularly when it came to funding. Graduating high school with only two CXC subjects, I found myself at a crossroads, unsure of where the financial means to support a four-year university journey would come from. After high school, I eagerly enroled in the “HEART programme” at Knox Community College, immersing myself in an electrical installation course at the NCTVET level while also tackling additional CXC subject. However, despite my determination, moments of doubt and self-criticism crept in. Witnessing many of my peers seamlessly transitioning from high school to university stirred feelings of inadequacy within me. The fear of falling behind, of being left behind, consumed my thoughts. I remember countless nights spent overthinking, questioning my worth and potential against the backdrop of my friends’ successes. During these tumultuous times, my main focus remained unwavering – to pursue a university education. However, the looming question of funding cast a shadow of doubt over my aspirations. I found solace in prayer, seeking guidance and support through various channels, including joining church Google Meets in search of clarity. It was during this period of introspection and fervent prayers that the Supreme Venture Scholarship emerged as a beacon of hope. In 2020, before even receiving my CXC results, the opportunity presented itself. The mere possibility of this scholarship ignited a renewed sense of faith within me. When the results finally arrived, affirming my success, I knew that this was the divine intervention I had been hoping for. With the support of the Supreme Ventures Scholarship, I embarked on my journey at the Caribbean Maritime University in 2021. The impact of this scholarship has been nothing short of life changing. Not only did it alleviate the financial burden by covering my full four-year accommodation, but it also provided invaluable monthly stipends. Beyond the financial support, the scholarship programme extended its care to our well-being, regularly checking in on our academic progress and mental health. This holistic approach to support has been a source of immense comfort and motivation throughout my university years. Knowing that there were people genuinely invested in my success, both academically and emotionally, has been a profound blessing. The monthly stipends eased the stress of financial worries allowing me to fully immerse myself in my studies and person growth. As I approach the completion of my university in 2024, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude. The Supreme Ventures Foundation Scholarship has not only opened doors to education but has also provided a sense of community and support that I cherish deeply. To the SVF team behind this scholarship, I extend my heartfelt thanks. Your belief in me during moments of doubt has been a guiding light, propelling me towards my goals. I stand on the brink of graduation, empowered and grateful for the opportunities afforded to me. Thank you, from the depths of my heart, for everything you have done to support me and my fellow recipients. Your generosity has truly changed lives. SUPREME VENTURES, through its Supreme Ventures Foundation, in 2021 offered 20 full-ride scholarships at a cost of approximately $100 million over four years to 29 former wards of state. The students who were selected with the assistance of the Child Protection and Family Services Agency, which has direct oversight for children in State care, received funds towards their tuition, boarding, subsistence stipend and miscellaneous expenses to pursue studies in actuarial science, architecture, law, economics, civil engineering, dentistry and education, to name a few. “I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude for being the recipient of not only this scholarship but your continued support throughout this journey. This generous endowment has been a transformative blessing in my academic journey, alleviating the financial burdens commonly associated with tertiary education and allowing me to focus on my studies with a clear mind. Thanks to your support, I no longer need to worry about tuition fees or rent. This financial relief has enabled me to immerse myself fully in my academic pursuits without the distractions of part-time work or financial concerns. Consequently, my passion for learning has thrived, and I have been able to engage deeply in my studies and contribute meaningfully to academic discussions. Additionally, I am grateful for the driving lessons, the pep-up session, and the encouragement offered whenever I meet with the team. These thoughtful initiatives have equipped me with practical life skills that enhance my employability and personal independence. Your generosity has empowered me to strive for excellence without reservation. I am deeply grateful for the faith you have placed in me, and I am committed to honouring this trust by achieving academic and professional success. Once again, thank you for this blessing. Your support has made a significant difference in my life, and I look forward to contributing positively to the community in return.” SUPREME VENTURES FOUNDATION Elisa Whyte – University of the West Indies SVF 20th anniversary scholarship recipient Elisa Whyte (right), Supreme Ventures Foundation 20th anniversary scholarship recipient, poses for a photo op at a Pep-up session with SVF Director Heather Goldson and Warren Thompson, director, Children & Family Programme at the CPFSA. NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | THURSDAY, MAY 16, 2024 14 Asha Wilks/Gleaner Writer ONE OF many lessons that Akalia Bailey has learnt is “what is for you, will be for you”. Bailey, the 2023 Jamaica Energy Partners (JEP) Group scholarship recipient, was baptised in basic school and has been following her Christian faith since Grade Three. She gives God the glory for His intervention in her life. She went through periods of uncertainty about how her studies at the Caribbean Maritime University would be paid for, especially as the family’s financial situation worsened when her father fell ill and her mother had to work fewer hours during the COVID-19 pandemic. “It became as if she was just working to go to work, like she couldn’t save anything at all ... . So, in 2022, she stepped away from her job and started to do vending instead,” she said of her mother. Bailey, a former Glenmuir High School student from Clarendon who relocated to Kingston for university, said, through it all, her faith brought her through. She learned about the scholarship offered by JEP Group while in search of several grants and scholarships that she applied for to ensure that she could afford her tuition. “Originally, I saw it (the JEP Group scholarship) on Instagram, and I overlooked it because the region that they said they were offering it to was Kingston, St Catherine and St Andrew, and I think another region, but they didn’t say Clarendon, so I wasn’t going to apply for it,” she said. But, when she happened to come across the advertisement again, she said “you know what, if it’s for me I will get it, if it’s not for me I won’t get it. So I applied for it anyway.” Bailey, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering in Operation Maintenance and Industrial Systems, said that the scholarship provider’s operations aligned with her desired career path. “They deal with power generation and I’m studying engineering. And I also did my internship at JPS so I’m interested in that field. [So] that’s why I really pushed to apply,” she said. It was with a sigh of relief and a joyous occasion when the final-year student received the call informing her that she was awarded the scholarship. She advises fellow scholarship seekers to apply “even when you think you’re not qualified ... if it’s yours, you will get it”. Bailey urges them not to become complacent after receiving the scholarship as “it’s easy to go downhill from there”. Future engineer secures JEP scholarship through effort and faith AS A former JEP Group scholarship recipient, my journey from scholarship recipient to where I am today in my medical career has been both challenging and rewarding. The scholarship provided the financial support I needed to pursue my dream of becoming a doctor, alleviating the burden of tuition fees and allowing me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies and extracurricular activities. During my undergraduate years, I immersed myself in various healthcarerelated volunteer activities and internships, solidifying my passion for medicine and exposing me to the realities of patient care. Graduating from medical school, I navigated the rigorous internship training phase, honing my clinical skills and expanding my medical knowledge through perseverance and dedication. Today, as a competent and compassionate physician, I have the privilege of positively impacting my patients’lives every day. Throughout this journey, the support of my mentors, colleagues, and the JEP family propelled me forward during moments of doubt and adversity. Additionally, the networking opportunities facilitated by the scholarship expanded my professional network and enriched my academic and personal growth. Since graduating from medical school, I’ve achieved significant milestones in my career, including completing certificate courses in various aspects of medicine and specialising in aesthetic medicine. These achievements reflect my dedication to excellence, continuous learning, and commitment to providing exceptional patient care. The scholarship ignited a transformative shift in my mindset, driving me to pursue excellence and professional advancement. As a scholarship recipient, I also volunteer at health outreach initiatives organised by JEP, refining my skills while nourishing my spirit through meaningful volunteer work. For current scholarship recipients or aspiring medical professionals, I would offer the following advice: Stay focused and committed; seek mentorship and guidance; embrace lifelong learning; stay updated on the latest research, advancements, and technologies in your speciality/field; develop strong communication skills as it is essential in any career, especially medicine; stay humble and compassionate, stay true to your values: uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct. Empowering Dreams: How JEP Group Scholarship Shaped A Doctor’s Path to Success TESTIMONIALS: JAMAICA ENERGY PARTNERS GROUP OSHANE CARTER IN 2017, I was awarded the prestigious Jamaica Energy Partners Group Scholarship, which set the stage for a transformative journey. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, I graduated with second-class honours in Accounting from the University of the West Indies, Mona, in 2020. This scholarship eased the financial burden and ignited my passion for mentorship and giving back. Following graduation, I joined JEP Group as an administrative assistant before transitioning to a purchasing officer role. Subsequently, I gained valuable experience at KPMG CARICOM as an auditor/accountant. These experiences, coupled with my master’s degree in Accounting and Chartered Accountant designation from ICAJ, shaped my professional journey. Now, as the Group Accounting Supervisor at First Union Financial Group of Companies, I oversee financial reporting and accounting processes. Guiding a team of 15, I prioritise motivating and encouraging their personal and professional growth, embodying the spirit of mentorship instilled by the JEP Group Scholarship. The scholarship provided financial support and opened doors to networking opportunities and internships, shaping my career aspirations. It validated my potential, instilled confidence, and positioned me as a strong candidate in the competitive job market. Looking ahead, I aspire to leverage my expertise to start an entrepreneurial venture bridging academia and the corporate world. This venture aims to empower individuals and businesses, fostering growth, development, and success. I’ve navigated my career path with confidence, resilience, and purpose by seizing opportunities, staying focused on goals, and embracing challenges. As I continue to pay forward the support I received, I hope to inspire the next generation of accounting professionals. I strongly encourage students to bet on themselves always and apply for the scholarship as the JEP Group continues to pave the way for a brighter future. NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | THURSDAY, MAY 16, 2024 18 “I can be changed by what happens to me but I refuse to be reduced by it.” THIS IS a quote from Maya Angelou, renowned poet and civil rights activist. Resilience therefore means that you experience, you feel, you fall, you hurt, but you keep going and us awardees stand as testament of that principle. Many of us were able to recover from challenges faced or could quickly adapt to changing situations. And here we are, benefiting from the toils of our labour in turn showing us that hard work does indeed pay off. I take this opportunity to thank the Carreras team and extended family for granting me this honour. I am blessed to have received this scholarship twice, now, as in my first year of study I was granted this scholarship, which allowed me to pursue my academic aspirations. I must give my personal testimony as it is with great pleasure that I highlight that I was given an award for top year-one law student at UWI Mona for the 2022-2023 period among other accolades. Thank you, Carreras, as it would not have been possible without your generosity. I am not alone in testimonies as many of us can relate to having a very difficult time financing undergraduate studies, often worrying about the prospects of further financing our education. Some of us take loans, which many times are still not enough to meet the gargantuan expenses that include tuition and miscellaneous costs. Despite the challenges, however, we remained determined that though the path seemed abysmal, we had no choice but to operate by faith and maximise on whatever opportunities we had. With a mindset of perseverance, we achieved. The Carreras team has recognised our continued diligence, despite the hurdles we faced. Let us therefore not squander this opportunity as we soar to even greater heights. Thank you, Carreras, for investing in our future. Let us continue to tread this path of excellence as we build a brighter nation, giving back to our country just as we have been given. Scholars’ Response AGAINST THE backdrop of challenges faced by many aspiring Jamaican students, the Carreras scholarships programme shines as a beacon of hope and opportunity. Each year Carreras Limited, through this longstanding initiative since 1967, invests in the academic pursuits of deserving tertiary students, embodying a tradition of commitment to education. Recently, at The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, the annual Carreras scholarship awards ceremony unfolded, celebrating the achievements of 83 outstanding scholars selected from a competitive pool of more than 600 applicants from diverse academic backgrounds. These scholars represent a spectrum of disciplines and their stories, often marked by financial hurdles and sacrifices, underscore the vital role that scholarships play in unlocking the potential of Jamaica’s youth. Beyond the financial assistance provided, Carreras’ commitment to nurturing talent and fostering academic excellence is evident in the rigorous selection criteria. Scholarships are awarded not only on academic merit but also on the applicants’ demonstrated extracurricular involvement and commitment to community service. This holistic approach ensures that recipients are not only academically proficient but also well-rounded individuals poised to make meaningful contributions to society. Franklin Murillo, managing director of Carreras Limited, reiterated the company’s dedication to educational development as a catalyst for social progress. He emphasised the transformative power of education in breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering individuals to realise their full potential. Through this initiative, Carreras continues to invest in Jamaica’s future leaders, nurturing a cadre of talented individuals equipped to drive positive change in their communities and beyond. As the 2024 scholarship cycle commences, Carreras invites aspiring scholars across Jamaica to seize the opportunity to pursue their academic aspirations. With a renewed commitment to educational excellence and social responsibility, Carreras remains steadfast in its mission to empower Jamaica’s youth and build a brighter future for all. NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | THURSDAY, MAY 16, 2024 21 FROM HER days at Rosehall AllAge in St Elizabeth, Suddanya Martin, now the proud recipient of the Barita Foundation Rita Humphries Scholarship, knew her calling was to become a guiding light in early childhood education. “My personality screams children,” she jokes. For Suddanya, giving back to her community means laying the essential groundwork for young students, ensuring that they are equipped with the foundational skills of literacy and numeracy. “Setting the right foundation is key,” she emphasises, as these skills pave the way for Jamaica’s brighter future. With one year left to complete her bachelor of Education at the Shortwood Teachers College in Kingston, Suddanya is driven by a deep-rooted commitment to her craft. The desire and talent for teaching, she believes, “runs in her veins”, with familial ties binding her to a legacy of educators. NAME OF FEATURE | THE GLEANER | THURSDAY, MAY 16, 2024 23 WHILE EDUCATION remains a viable passport to the future, VM remains the boarding pass that will take many Jamaicans from point of entry to destination. The Foundation continues to create, reshape and transform the educational journeys and goals of many Jamaicans, including Davion Sterling. Sterling was the only student in 2019 to cop the VM Foundation’s Master Plan scholarship, which came just in time to support his decision to study a master’s degree in chemistry with education. His journey towards the scholarship began with a simple post on Instagram that caught his attention, leading him to apply after realising he met all the criteria outlined. Sterling was always aware of his potential and his brilliance and his ambitious nature always played to his strength. “The selection process, which included a panel interview, was a positive and enjoyable experience for me. I was most of all impressed by the professionalism and welcoming atmosphere created by the VM Group from the point of me walking into that interview, to me exiting.” But what cannot be left out of his story of academic pursuits is his firm family structure which consists of a supportive mother, a diligent father and encouraging sister, who all back his dedication to continuously excel. For Sterling, his passion for chemistry and teaching naturally guided his academic path, setting the stage for a fulfilling career in education. “Receiving the Master Plan Scholarship from the VM Foundation not only alleviated the financial burden on my family but it also served as a reminder of the impact our actions as well as the actions of others have on the present and future of our young people. The opportunity reinforced the importance of volunteering for the right reasons and striving for excellence in all endeavours, which is something I live by,” he says. The Cornwall College alumnus is happy to be back on home ground, but this time giving back as a dedicated chemistry teacher, with a long-term goal of contributing to national development through STEM education initiatives. Reflecting on his own journey, Sterling’s advice to others starting out in their academic journeys is to seek out similar opportunities for academic support, while staying true to themselves. “I believe that being authentic will bring quality people in your life and the right people which will open doors of opportunities you would have never dreamt about otherwise. There is saying that goes ‘real knows real’, and I believe in that.” He regularly embraces the wisdom of the quote “know thyself,” something he saw daily displayed on the walls at Irvine Hall while he was a student at the University of the West Indies. For him, this quote emphasises the power of self-awareness in shaping a successful and fulfilling life. As Sterling continues to make a difference in the lives of his students and his community, his story stands as a demonstration of how the decisions of organisations like the VM Group can make meaningful and long-lasting impacts. The scholarship is open to students who sit the national Primary Exit Profile (PEP) examination in the current year of the scholarship. The scholarship is renewable once students maintain an average of 80 per cent or higher. The Sagicor Foundation Scholarship programme is dedicated to empowering young Jamaicans on their journey to success through meaningful financial support, serving as a beacon of hope for those striving to achieve their full potential. Applications for the secondary scholarship are submitted through the policyholders’ respective insurance agent, broker, or their employer’s HR department. For the tertiary scholarship, applications are completed online at sagicorfoundationscholarships. com. The application period began on May 13 and will end on June 7. Q. Why did you apply for a Sagicor Foundation Scholarship? A. I applied to the Sagicor Foundation Scholarship because there was no certainty that my college tuition would have been paid and I did not want my mother, or myself, to be burdened with finding money to cover it. Two of my main worries were that it is very difficult to find employment while in university and repaying student loans might have been stressful. Q. What was the application process like for you? A. Since the application was done through an online portal, the process was smooth and straightforward. There weren’t any complex questions or unnecessary documents required. The interview felt friendly and the panellists paid keen attention to the contents of my application and showed great interest in me. Thus, any anxiety I had quickly went away. Q. Describe the feeling you had when you found out you were awarded, who did you tell first? A. When I first found out I was awarded, I felt extremely emotional. I read the email in front of my mom, and she screamed for joy. The feeling of making her proud was incredible and I felt like my life goals started falling into place. Some of my other family members were around so there was a wave of happiness. Q. What role has the scholarship played in your academic journey? A. The scholarship has been monumental in relieving me of the stress of paying tuition. It has allowed me to focus on completing my studies with a strong GPA, as opposed to struggling to find other avenues to fund my education. Q. What is your favourite thing about being a Sagicor scholar? A. I love volunteering at Sagicor Foundation sponsored events. It’s always fun to connect with other scholars and have new experiences, while contributing to social development. Q. Would you recommend this scholarship to anyone else, and why? A. Absolutely. I would recommend the scholarship to anyone who needs to finance their tertiary education. Not only does it provide much-needed tuition assistance, but you’re able to meet new ambitious individuals and participate in a wide range of activities as a volunteer.
