Senegal hold on to advance

SUWON, South Korea (AP):

FIRST-TIME WORLD Cup finalists Senegal held on for a 3-3 draw against Uruguay yesterday in Group A to reach the last 16 with two first-half goals from Papa Bouba Diop and another from Khalilou Fadiga on a penalty in the 20th.

Senegal finished second in Group A and will face the first-place team in Group F, which could be Sweden, England or Argentina.

Uruguay rallied in the second half to put Senegal under pressure with goals from second-half substitute Richard Morales -- in the first minute -- another from substitute Diego Forlan in the 69th and a penalty from Alvaro Recoba in the 88th after Morales was brought down in the area by Habib Beye.

Uruguay almost pulled out the victory -- and advancement to the second round -- in the first minute of injury time when Senegal's Lamine Diatta headed the ball off the line and, staring at an open net, Morales sent a close-in header wide.

In Senegal, people careened through the capital Dakar in battered old cars, celebrating fans hanging out the windows waving fists in the air and Senegal's red, green and yellow flag.

"It is a historic day for Senegal," said the Africans' French coach Bruno Metsu. "It is their first participation and to be part of the 16 best teams in the world I think is really an extraordinary success.

"It was engrossing, moving, difficult and it was a fantastic spectacle."

Uruguay's Forlan was grim after the loss.

"We're bitter," Forlan said. "One goal could have made the difference and we should have had it at the end. ... The team was doing all it could to change the outcome in the second half. The goal at the beginning of the second half gave us a lift."
