Alex pounds Texas

At least one thousand people in southern Texas have been evacuated to shelters as Hurricane Alex batters the US state.

Officials say the city of Brownsville has been taking the brunt of Alex’s outer bands after as many as six tornadoes were reported in the area.

Sergeant Jimmy Manrrique, the spokesman for the Brownsville Police Department, said the city was receiving intense rain and floodwaters were reported to be as high as two feet in some areas.

Emergency services say no injuries were immediately reported, but there were some damage to property, downed trees and power lines.
