Rainfall has had devastating effects on several communities in Portland. During heavy showers on Monday December 21, 2009, a bus with passengers on board overturned into a ditch, after the driver lost control of the vehicle. Two women are confirmed dead.

Ricardo Makyn/Staff Photographer. The bus than ran into a culvert in Hope Bay Portland, killing 28-year-old Vanessa Francis of Box Street in St Mary, and Janice Core of Bellfield also in St Mary. The body of the women was pulled from a canal by divers, and other rescue workers, who turned out in larger numbers shortly after the accident. Two other persons including a five-year-old girl are still missing, while six persons were treated for minor injuries and realeased from the Port Antonio hospital late last night.
