T
housands cheered,
clapped and waved flags to give
His Imperial Majesty, Haile Se-
lassie Emperor of Ethiopia; a rapturous
farewell yesterday morning, as he left
the Corporate Area for Montego Bay.
From the moment he left King’s House
to the time the Royal coach departed
from the Kingston Railway Station
for the journey into rural Jamaica. His
Imperial Majesty was
mobbed.
The crush was greatest at Payne Av-
enue, where he laid the cornerstone for
a preparatory school he is donating to
Jamaica to mark his visit. Although the
milling throng surged near the Royal
visitor at Payne Avenue, and held up
the motorcade for a short time during
its journey to the railway station, the
police and military equipped with tear
gas and fixed bayonets, kept order.
There was no incident.
From early morning, hundreds start-
ed taking up positions along the route
from King’s House and at a school site
at Delacree Pen. As the procession left
King’s House shortly after 8.00 o’clock
a thunderous applause went up.
The jubilation continued along the
route to Delacree Pen, as thousands
lined the roadway shouting, clapping
and waving. However, things reached
fever pitch when the Emperor arrived
at the school site as an estimated 5,000
persons jostled each other to get near
him.
After some minutes, His majesty
was handed a trowel and some cement
with which he laid the corner stone.
His Imperial Majesty completed his
journey in the Corporate Area with
cheers from thousands of his admir-
ers as the motorcade proceeded in the
railway station.
Cheering,
waving City
farewell
