The Island Traffic Authority plays an important role within the Ministry of Transport
and Mining as far as regulations and maintenance of proper standards for motor vehi-
cles are concerned. The body was established to that vehicles operating on Jamaica’s
roads are roadworthy and compliant with the requisite guidelines under the law.
Among its many functions are:
The testing and certifying of drivers to ensure that they are competent to operate a
motor vehicle
The enforcement of the Road Traffic Act and its Regulations
I
nspection of all motor vehicles
Granting of Certificates of fitness for motor vehicles
Maintaining records of road accidents
Weighing of motor trucks to ensure compliance with weight limits
The provision of expert advice to the Trade Board relative to the suitability of vehicles
to be imported into the island
Working closely with Jamaica Customs with respect to verification of chassis informa-
tion
The provision of Board of Survey information working in conjunction with the
Ministry of Finance
Achievements since February, 2016
• Implementation of the Vehicle Management System at the Swallowfield Examination
Depot; this is to be followed by the roll-out in other depots islandwide. This is a system
where technology in the form of computerized systems will be employed in the opera-
tions of the ITA.
• Collaborations with HEART TRUST/NCTVET in the development of training pro-
grammes to certify and train Drivers and Driving School Instructors. Nine Officers
have so far been trained and are currently awaiting certification from
HEART/NCTVET. A second batch is currently in training.
• Completed standards and requirements to certify Driving Schools.
• Embarked on the construction of a new Depot for the May Pen Examination Depot
• Undertook upgrade and improvement of several depots – to include the installation
of A/C and Rest Rooms at Swallowfield Depot; installed water coolers at seven depots
across the island; installation of A/C Units at Port Antonio, Black River, Morant Bay,
Spanish Town and Soanish Town Road Examination depots
