The Aeronautical Telecommunications Ltd. (AEROTEL) is a government
owned limited liability company and a subsidiary of the Jamaica Civil
Aviation Authority (JCAA). It provides information communication and tech-
nology (ICT) engineering support services primarily for the JCAA, but also
for the Airports Authority of Jamaica, various airlines, the Meteorological
Office as well as other interests within the aviation industry. AEROTEL also
owns and operates KOOL 97FM, which was established in 2010 to support
the aviation industry by providing flight announcements and other relevant
information to assist the industry and passengers. Combined with the opera-
tion of the radio station KOOL 97FM, the agency continues to play a signifi-
cant role among the entities reporting to the Ministry of Transport and
Mining.
Among AEROTEL’s achievements
over the period have been:
The provision of technical support to the JCAA’s multibillion-dollar
infrastructure modernisation programme – in particular to the effi-
ciency and security to aircraft traversing Jamaica’s Flight
Information Region (FIR). In this respect, AEROTEL has assisted
with the operations of:
The new Instrument Landing System at Sangster International
Airport
The newly commissioned Air Traffic Tower at the Norman Manley
International Airport
The new Air Traffic Management system now being deployed at the
JCAA Winchester Road , Kingston 10 headquarters
The evolution of KOOL 97FM into one of the leading commercial
radio stations in the island. The most recent market surveys show that
KOOL FM is one of the strongest stations in terms of listenership
within business places, in the Jamaican diaspora, on the Internet and
with discerning music lovers.
In 2016, the station was named by UK international media house,
‘The Telegraph’ as one of the top 100 radio stations worldwide which
operates on the Internet; no other station within the Caribbean enjoys
this status.
