THE UNIVERSITY COUNCIL OF JAMAICA FEATURE |

VII

MONDAY, MARCH 5, 2018

T

HE 13TH Annual Quality Assurance in Higher Education

Week is but another moment in the life of the University

Council of Jamaica (UCJ), in its pursuit of quality. It is but a

moment in over 30 years of continuous and dedicated work on

the part of the UCJ, as it seeks to assure quality in higher

education in Jamaica. In fact, its impact has been beyond

Jamaica. It is from the UCJ’s experience that many quality

assurance agencies, in the English-speaking Caribbean, were

initiated and developed through the sharing of its experience

and by its aiding in their

institutional and

manpower development.

Much of the early training

in quality assurance for

the emergent QA bodies,

in the English-speaking

Caribbean was done by the staffers of the UCJ and its founding

executive director, Dr Ethley London. Many of the consultancies

for the establishment of QA bodies were similarly sourced. Even

CANQATE, on whose behalf this message is penned, is a

beneficiary of the UCJ’s largesse.

Moments, infinetesimal as they might be, create a leap in the

work of an organisation and serve as a catalyst for its renewed

growth and development. Undoubtedly, all of those characteristics

can be associated with the UCJ’s annual moment – the observance

of its Annual Quality Assurance in Higher Education Week.

CANQATE acknowledges the invaluable contribution of the UCJ

to quality in higher education in the Caribbean and pledges to

continue its collaboration at the bilateral and multilateral levels

in that regard. We look forward to another fruitful year in your

endeavours and as partners.
